The Facility & Equipment

Introduction: Most musicians and singers do not have the budget that it takes to produce a project on a reliable Pro Tools set-up. I emphasize the word reliable with good reason. There are many project studios based on “affordable” computer based systems. The problem is these set ups crash more often than many proprietors care to admit. Add to that the fact that computer platforms and software have a way of quickly becoming obsolete.  Reliable, good sounding Pro Tools set ups are seldom within the budgets of  unsigned artists.

The Facility & Equipment
digital audio workstations

Stand alone DAW’s (digital audio workstations) on the other hand are very reliable. They are designed specifically for one purpose: recording music. There is no conflict between the hardware and software because they were designed for each other.  I am not alone in my opinion that the Roland VS platform stands out as a leader among DAWs.

There are two Roland 24 track recorders one 18 track and a16 track recorder in use for various purposes at the Batcave Studio.

My Rooms: The main room is an irregular shaped room approximately 18X 20 ft. The room has been thoroughly treated with Auralex acoustic foam panels on the walls and ceiling and Bass traps in the corners. Movable Primacoustic dividers are used as needed for each specific recording task. The room has no standing wave reflection problems the sound is well focused but not dead sounding. The room is thoroughly grounded with copper cable in contact with every steel stud used in constructing the studio. Auralex acoustic foam panels on the walls and ceiling and Bass traps in the corners

The control room is a small rectangular room approximately 9 X 9 ft. It has also been treated with Auralex foam panels

Recorders: 2 Roland VS2480 DAWs provide 24 tracks each. Each of these has full recall automation and motorized faders. These are my workhorses for recording mixing and mastering your project. One Roland VS1680 and one VS 1880 are also used at my facility or for location recording. They work well for a variety of tasks such as Vinyl, reel to reel or cassette to CD conversions, low cost mastering of projects recorded elsewhere etc.
